Where to Stay in Copper Canyon: Creel, Divisadero, Bahuichivo and El Fuerte

Where to sleep at each stop of El Chepe, from Chihuahua to Los Mochis: altitude, train times and our hotel picks for Creel, Divisadero, Cerocahui and El Fuerte, and how to book the nights around the train.

Book the train first, the beds second

Where you sleep in the Copper Canyon is decided by the timetable, not the other way round. The Chepe Express runs toward the sierra on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays and toward the coast on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. In May, June, August and September it runs only from Thursday to Sunday. So every time you get off, the next train in the same direction is two or three days later, and up to five days later in those four months. Fix the train legs, then book the nights, and remember that train tickets are not refundable.

Pick your stop

The stops run in the order of the track, from the city of Chihuahua in the high desert to Los Mochis on the Pacific coast.

Chihuahua

Where the railway starts, 654 km from the Pacific

Chihuahua city is a start or end night, not a canyon stop. The Chepe Express does not reach it: only the Chepe Regional starts here, and most road transfers to Creel leave from the city. Sleep here the night before the Regional or before a transfer. The Chepe Regional leaves Chihuahua for Los Mochis on Tuesdays and Saturdays.

Creel

Kilometre 297 of 654 from Chihuahua

Chepe Express at Creel, local time
Toward Los Mochis08:00Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays
Arrives from Los Mochis17:40Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays

Creel is where the Express starts and ends in the sierra, and the town with the most choice of places to stay along the canyon part of the route. It works as a base: day trips to the canyon, jeep tours and hikes leave from here, and there is a train ticket office. At this altitude the average low at Creel's weather station is below freezing from November through March, so heating is worth checking when you book (the month-by-month numbers are in our best time to visit).

Divisadero

Kilometre 355 of 654 from Chihuahua

Chepe Express at Divisadero, local time
Toward Los Mochis09:55Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays
Toward Creel16:15Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays

This is the view people come for: hotels on the edge of the canyon, with the viewpoints a walk away. It is also the easiest stop to add to a trip, because the train reaches Divisadero at 16:15 from Los Mochis and at 09:55 from Creel. If you only sleep one night with a canyon view, sleep it here. There is little around the station besides the viewpoints and the hotels, so book before you ride. Read our guide to Divisadero.

Posada Barrancas / Areponapuchi

Kilometre 359 of 654 from Chihuahua

The Posada Barrancas station sits on the same rim about 4 km down the track from Divisadero, less than a kilometer from the village of Areponápuchi. The Chepe Regional stops here but the Express does not, so Express passengers get off at Divisadero; ask your hotel how you get from the station before you book. Booking.com has no separate page for Posada Barrancas or Areponapuchi, so its hotels appear under Divisadero.

Bahuichivo and Cerocahui

Kilometre 402 of 654 from Chihuahua

Chepe Express at Bahuichivo, local time
Toward Los Mochis11:25Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays
Toward Creel14:25Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays

Bahuichivo is a station, not a place to stay: the village people sleep in is Cerocahui, about 20 minutes away, where the Jesuits built the mission church in 1680 (it was rebuilt in 1940). It is the stop for people who want the quietest night of the route. There is no town at the station, so ask your hotel how you get from Bahuichivo to Cerocahui when you book.

El Fuerte

Kilometre 572 of 654 from Chihuahua

Chepe Express at El Fuerte, local time
Toward Los Mochis14:35Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays
Toward Creel09:20Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays

El Fuerte is about two hours by train from Los Mochis and the softest landing of the route: a colonial town near sea level, and the easiest place to break the journey if you start on the coast. The train leaves at 09:20 toward the sierra and passes at 14:35 toward Los Mochis, local time. Sinaloa, where El Fuerte is, runs one hour behind Chihuahua. Read our guide to El Fuerte.

Los Mochis

The end of the line, kilometre 654

Chepe Express at Los Mochis, local time
Arrives from Creel16:40Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays
Toward Creel07:00Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays

Los Mochis is an arrival and departure night rather than a destination in itself. The Express leaves at 07:00 and the station opens an hour before, so a night in town before the ride is the safe move. The bay at Topolobampo is the local outing (Los Mochis tour and Topolobampo bay boat ride). Sinaloa runs one hour behind Chihuahua, so check which time your ticket shows. Read our guide to Topolobampo and Los Mochis.

How to choose by trip length

  • Three days: Los Mochis, one full day on the train, Creel. One night at each end.
  • Five days: add El Fuerte between the coast and the sierra, or a night on the rim at Divisadero.
  • Seven days: add a night on the rim at Divisadero and a quiet night in Cerocahui.

The day-by-day versions are in our 3-, 5- and 7-day itineraries.

Before you book

  • Sinaloa is one hour behind Chihuahua: El Fuerte and Los Mochis run on Sinaloa time, so check which time zone your arrival is in before you book a late check-in.
  • Train tickets are not refundable, date changes cost MXN 350 per ticket plus any fare difference, no changes are allowed in the 72 hours before the trip starts, and the Divisadero to Creel leg cannot be changed at all. Hotel flexibility is worth more than train flexibility.
  • Stations open one hour before departure. In Divisadero and Bahuichivo that matters, because there is little around them.
  • Check the current travel advice for the region before you commit.

Train times, days, reduced months, station opening and the Sinaloa time difference checked on September 16, 2026 against the operator's schedules; ticket rules on September 15, 2026 against the operator's terms; stops of the Chepe Regional on September 15, 2026 against the operator's comparison page and its Regional days against its Regional schedule page; Cerocahui, the 20 minutes from the station and the mission dates on September 16, 2026 against the operator's Bahuichivo page. Creel's average lows are the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional climate normals for station 8038, 1961–1990. Altitudes, rail distances and the station's distance to Areponápuchi come from the track and places in OpenStreetMap with INEGI elevation data (© OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL; INEGI, Continental relief 2016); El Fuerte's position on the track is approximate.
