Best Time to Visit Copper Canyon: Weather and Train Schedule by Month

October and November, then March and April. Those months are dry in the sierra, mild by day, and outside the heaviest train seasons. July to September is the rainy stretch; December to February brings sub-zero nights in Creel; and from May to September the Chepe Express runs only Thursday to Sunday, which narrows your options more than the weather does.

The rest of this page is the evidence: the official climate normals for the two ends of the route, the train calendar, and an honest note about what nobody publishes for the canyon rim itself.

Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional publishes climate normals per station. The two useful ones for this trip are Creel (station 8038, in the sierra at 2,348 m) and El Fuerte (station 25023, at 85 m on the Sinaloa side). They are not from the same period — Creel's temperature normal covers 1961–1990 and El Fuerte's 1981–2010 — so read them as the shape of the year, not as a forecast.

The contrast is the whole point of this railway: in January, Creel averages a maximum of 13 °C and a minimum of −5 °C while El Fuerte sits at 28 °C by day. You can be scraping frost off a window in the morning and eating outdoors that evening.

July, August and September carry the rain at both ends: Creel averages 178 mm in July and 134 mm in August; El Fuerte 176 mm and 162 mm. It is the greenest time in the canyons and the one with the highest chance of an afternoon storm, low cloud over the viewpoints and slower dirt roads for the jeep and hiking day trips.

If you travel then, keep the canyon-rim activities early in the day and treat afternoons as flexible: the Copper Canyon day trip from Creel and the jeep tour both depend on weather more than on the calendar.

From December to February, Creel's normal minimum sits between −4 °C and −5 °C. That is the season for clear air and long views, but you need real layers and a hotel whose heating you have confirmed. At the other end, from May to July El Fuerte averages maximums between 35 °C and 40 °C — pleasant early and hard work at midday.

Chihuahua city, where many trips start, is milder than the sierra in winter (normal 1991–2020: 19 °C by day, 3 °C at night in January) and hot in June, with a maximum around 35 °C.

The Chepe Express runs towards the sierra on Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays and towards the coast on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. In May, June, August and September it runs only Thursday to Sunday. The operator also publishes a 2026 calendar that marks high and low season: the high-season blocks fall around the end of March and the first half of April, July, and the second half of December into early January.

In practice: a Tuesday in May is a day the train may not run at all, and the cheapest, quietest window is the low season in the dry months — late October to November, and early March.

• January–February. Dry, bright, freezing nights in Creel, perfect weather in El Fuerte. Train runs all week days it normally does.
• March. Dry and warming; the last stretch before the high-season block at the end of the month.
• April. Warm and dry; high season at the start, quieter after mid-month.
• May–June. Hot on the coast, dry in the sierra, and Thursday-to-Sunday departures only.
• July–August. The rain, the green, and the high season in July. Storms are afternoon events.
• September. Still wet, still Thursday to Sunday, and the least busy of the rainy months.
• October–November. Our pick: the rain is over, days are mild in the sierra, and it is low season.
• December. Cold and clear, with the high-season block and the busiest trains from mid-month.

Two things, stated plainly. There is no weather station at the canyon rim. The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional's catalogue has no station at Divisadero, Areponapuchi or Posada Barrancas, and the stations that do exist along that stretch, such as San Rafael and Cerocahui, have no published normals. Creel, 2,348 m up and a couple of hours away by train, is the closest station with usable data, and the rim is lower and more exposed than the town.

And Creel's temperature normal is old: the only SMN normal for that station with maximum and minimum temperatures covers 1961–1990, and the station is listed as suspended. The 1971–2000 file for the same station publishes rainfall only. Any site giving you today's Creel averages to one decimal is not getting them from a newer official normal, because there isn't one.
