Copper Canyon Packing List: What to Wear and Pack for El Chepe, Season by Season

A printable Copper Canyon packing list for each season, based on official climate normals for Creel and Los Mochis, plus what El Chepe lets you bring on board: luggage, cash, medicines and ID.

One trip, two climates

The Chepe Express climbs from Los Mochis, 15 m (49 ft) above sea level, to Creel, at 2,348 m (7,703 ft), in a single day. That is why packing for the Copper Canyon is unusual: on a winter trip you can leave a coast where afternoons average 26 to 28 °C (80 to 82 °F) and sleep in a town where the average low is below freezing.

Pack for layers, not for one temperature. Everything below is sorted by season, then by what the train allows.

The numbers behind the list

These are the official climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN): the long-term monthly averages, shown here as the range across the months of each season.

SeasonCreel average lowsCreel average highsLos Mochis average highsRainy days a month in Creel
December to February−5 to −4 °C (23 to 24 °F)13 to 14 °C (55 to 58 °F)26 to 28 °C (80 to 82 °F)4 to 5
March to May−4 to 2 °C (26 to 36 °F)17 to 24 °C (62 to 74 °F)30 to 36 °C (87 to 96 °F)2
June to September7 to 10 °C (45 to 50 °F)23 to 26 °C (73 to 79 °F)37 to 38 °C (99 to 101 °F)9 to 21
October and November−3 to 2 °C (27 to 35 °F)18 to 21 °C (64 to 69 °F)31 to 36 °C (88 to 97 °F)4 to 5

Two things to keep in mind. The Creel figures come from a station that no longer operates and cover 1961–1990, while the Los Mochis figures cover 1991–2020; read them as the shape of the year, not as a forecast. For the week of your trip, check the live forecast on the SMN website before you close the suitcase. Month by month, with El Fuerte too, is in our best time to visit.
