This page sorts places by the meal you need, so you can print the page and pick on the day. Each entry tells you the kind of food, a price range compared with other places in town, a dish to try and what it is near.
Two things to sort out before you arrive:
Cards work in most places now, but carry some pesos. Paying by card is widely accepted in Creel today, and many hotels and businesses run high-speed internet over Starlink. Even so, a few small kitchens take cash only, on board the train only cash is accepted, and the operator says the only ATMs on the Express route are in Los Mochis, El Fuerte and Creel.
Arriving on the evening train? The Express from Los Mochis reaches Creel at 17:40, so plan dinner near your hotel.
Dishes to try
Flour tortillas, stretched and cooked by hand
Start here
Handmade flour tortillas
Here the everyday tortilla is made of wheat flour, not corn, and the ones worth the trip are stretched and cooked by hand: thin, a little uneven, with golden toasted spots and pockets of air. They come with almost everything below. Ask for tortillas de harina hechas a mano, handmade flour tortillas, and you will get the real thing.
Breakfast
Eggs with chorizo and refried beans
Scrambled eggs with chorizo, or with ham: the two you will see most often on a sierra breakfast plate.
Refried beans on the side, and more flour tortillas to fold them into.
Chile pasado — green chiles roasted, peeled and dried in the sun, then rehydrated and cooked with cheese or with beef. The most Chihuahuan thing on the table.
Asado de puerco en rojo — pork stewed in a thick sauce of dried red chiles.
Gorditas, with a choice of fillings.
Around the state you will also find chile relleno and machaca. The small canyon stops keep to the classics; Creel today has a bit of everything, from a craft brewery to a pizza place people talk about.
What to order is our own editorial pick, written with our editor in Chihuahua on September 17, 2026; it is not a ranking and no restaurant paid for it.

Eating on the train
No ticket class on El Chepe includes food or drinks. According to the operator:
Class
Where you can eat
First
A restaurant, which the operator's comparison page lists for First and Executive, and access to the terrace
Executive
Its own restaurant and bar, with an à la carte menu
Tourist
A restaurant for that class (the Kori dining car on the comparison page), with snacks and drinks
On board, only cash is accepted, because there is no internet connection to process cards. The ride from Los Mochis to Creel takes about nine hours, so plan at least one meal on the train.
What we check before listing a place
We list a restaurant only when our data shows it operating, with the date of that check. We do not copy star ratings, review counts, opening hours or phone numbers from map or booking sites, because they change and are not ours to publish; instead, we describe the kind of food, the price range within town and what the place is near.
