Chihuahua to Creel: Train, Bus, Transfer or Tour

Plenty of readers plan to land in Chihuahua and step straight onto the famous train. It does not work like that: the Chepe Express runs between Los Mochis and Creel only. From Chihuahua city your options are the Chepe Regional, which does start there, or road transport to Creel, about the length of a working day either way.

The Regional is the local train: a single tourist class, snacks and a cafeteria, and sixteen stations between Chihuahua and Los Mochis, with Creel the fifth stop. It leaves Chihuahua on Tuesdays and Saturdays and returns from Los Mochis on Wednesdays and Sundays, and the whole run takes around fifteen hours.

Two things to know before you count on it. It is not sold online: seats are booked by phone on 800 122 4373 or at a ticket office. And the operator publishes the Regional's station-by-station times as an image on its schedule page rather than as a table, so confirm the Creel arrival when you call.

If your dates do not line up with the train, the road option most visitors take doubles as a day out. The transfer from Chihuahua to Creel with a Mennonite community lunch picks you up at your hotel, stops on the outskirts of Cuauhtémoc for about five hours with a Mennonite community and lunch, passes the rock formations known as the valleys of Frogs and Mushrooms, and reaches Creel around 7 pm. It runs about nine hours door to door and can be cancelled free up to 48 hours before.

Buses do run the Chihuahua–Creel road, and it is the cheapest way to cover it. We are not going to print departure times, because we could not verify any: on September 15, 2026 the carriers' own sites offered a search box rather than a published timetable, and their terminal pages loaded no schedule at all. The times that circulate online come from third-party aggregators, not from the companies.

So treat the bus as a real option with an unverified timetable: ask at the Chihuahua bus terminal or call the carrier for the day you plan to travel, and leave margin if you have a train or a tour to catch at the other end.

The third route is to let someone else solve the logistics. Multi-day packages from Chihuahua include the road to Creel and the Express leg through the canyon, so you arrive with hotels and transfers already arranged. Day trips from Chihuahua, such as the Copper Canyon excursion, cover the canyon in one long day if you cannot spare a night in the sierra.

• Dates flexible, want the rails: the Regional on a Tuesday or Saturday.
• Fixed dates, want the day to count: the private transfer with the Mennonite lunch. It is the option that turns a transfer into part of the trip.
• Tight budget: the bus, with the timetable confirmed at the terminal.
• No time to plan: a package that already includes Creel, Divisadero and the Express.

Whatever you choose, book the night in Creel before the seat: the town is small and the train and tour groups arrive together.
